At the chrome mining plant, medium-voltage soft starters were selected for 1 piece 6.6 kV–450 kW and 1 piece 4 kV–750 kW crusher motor.
In the system, two separate medium-voltage soft starters were used for the two crusher medium-voltage motors. In line with the operating conditions, a German-origin Igel brand soft starter was selected.
The purpose is to reduce the inrush current that occurs at motor startup and to prevent electrical and mechanical shocks. Since the motors are heavily loaded when at a standstill, they require higher torque at startup. With the medium-voltage soft starter, high-torque starting capability has been achieved. In addition, full motor protection has been provided for each motor through a motor protection relay.
Considering the operating conditions and the high torque requirement of both motors, a smooth start of approximately 21 seconds was achieved using a medium-voltage soft starter.
