Hydrogen Risk in industrial plants…

Hydrogen gas and its place in industrial areas

Hydrogen gas is a gas that is widely used in industrial production. It is preferred because it is a clean burning gas. Lighter than air, H2 gas produces only water vapor when it burns and is preferred for reducing the carbon footprint. Hydrogen is used in many industries such as oil refineries, iron/steel industry, chemical industry and energy storage. Hydrogen gas is flammable and toxic. It needs to be monitored and measured with flame detectors and gas detectors to reduce the safety risk and take necessary precautions.

Hydrogen Flame detection

Hydrogen flames cause serious safety issues on industrial sites. These flames are virtually invisible during the day, often with a very faint blue color that field personnel cannot see, meaning they can accidentally enter an active fire without realizing it. Hydrogen flames burn at extremely high temperatures, reaching over 2,000°C and the flame can spread 2 meters per second. The flames produce very little radiant heat compared to hydrocarbon fires, which means that field personnel may not feel the heat until they are dangerously close to the flame. To detect invisible Hydrogen flames, facilities can use ultraviolet or infrared flame detectors. Hydrogen flames are more difficult to extinguish than normal fires, using water can intensify the flames, the best way to stop them is to turn off the gas source.

FGD brand FLS-UV-IR, FLS-UV-IR-HD, FLS-IR3-H2 and FLS-IR3-H2-HD flame detectors offer professional solutions for detecting risks in facilities.

Hydrogen gas leak detection

Hydrogen gas has explosive and toxic properties. H2 gas leakage, which is lighter than air, must be detected quickly. Gas sensors should be placed near potential leaks to continuously monitor hydrogen. A panel should monitor the live readings of H2 sensors installed on-site. In emergency situations, employees in areas where hydrogen is present must be evacuated and the amount of hydrogen must be rapidly reduced.

Oldham brand OLCT-100XP, OLCT60XP, GD-10P gas detectors and MX32 – MX43 gas detection panels offer professional solutions for the detection of risks in facilities.
