Spectrex Background and History
Spectrex has led flame and gas detection innovation for over 40 years. The company pioneered the world’s first ultraviolet infrared (UV/IR) flame detector and later developed the QuadSense IR3 triple infrared technology, both of which stand as high-level innovations in hazardous area detection. Spectrex was also the first to incorporate the Xenon flash lamp in open path gas detectors, solving false alarm issues that were common across the industry. Today, Spectrex operates as a brand under Emerson.
Certifications and Quality Standards
Spectrex products are certified and approved by independent testing and approval organizations worldwide. The 40/40 Series flame detectors and SafEye Quasar 900 open path gas detectors carry ATEX and IECEx approvals for use in hazardous areas, as well as FM and FMC approvals for the USA and Canada, INMETRO for Brazil, UKCA for the United Kingdom, and EAC approvals for Russia and Kazakhstan. Products are also rated IP66 and IP68 for water and dust protection, meet NEMA 250 6P standards, and comply with DNV environmental standards. The SafEye Quasar 900 is SIL 2 certified per IEC 61508, verified by TÜV. The 40/40D and 40/40C flame detectors are SIL 3 compatible.
Vision and Product Development
Spectrex’s approach to product development is built on solving real detection challenges in the field. Spectrex Product Groups
- The Spectrex 40/40D Flame Detector is the flagship model of the 40/40 Series. Using QuadSense IR3 and UV/IR technologies, it provides detection ranges of up to 300 ft (90 m) for hydrocarbon fires, ultra-fast response under 50 milliseconds, and a temperature operating range of -60 to +85°C. It carries an MTBF of 150,000 hours. SIL 3 compatible.
- The Spectrex 40/40C Flame Detector is the compact model of the 40/40 Series. It shares the same QuadSense IR3 and UV/IR technologies and offers detection ranges of up to 215 ft (65 m). Its lighter aluminum enclosure makes it suitable for space constrained or weight sensitive installations. It carries an MTBF of 150,000 hours. SIL 3 compatible.
- The Spectrex SafEye Quasar 900 is an open path combustible gas detection system. Using infrared DOAS technology with a Xenon flash source, it detects hydrocarbon gas clouds across distances of up to 200 meters. It is designed for reliable operation in fog, rain, snow, dust, and extreme weather conditions. SIL 2 certified per IEC 61508.
- The Spectrex SharpEye Flame Simulators (FS Series) allow end-to-end testing of Spectrex flame detectors without the need for a real fire. Handheld and portable, they can be operated by a single person from floor level without scaffolding. ATEX and IECEx certified for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas.
