IZMIR DRINKING WATER ARSENIC REMOVAL PLANT

Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a natural cause. A 2007 study found that over 137 million people in more than 70 countries are probably affected by arsenic poisoning of drinking water.  Maximum level accepted by WHO (World Health Organization) is 10 micrograms per liter.

Izmir, the third largest city of Türkiye is supplying its drinking water from Göksu and Sarıkız wells due to the draught it faces.  The arsenic contamination at the wells was an issue for the city. A treatment plant with optimum running costs was needed to be erected in a short time.

The largest Arsenic removal plant with capacity of 3.000lt/second (270.000m3/day) has been erected in İzmir, ABC ENSER has delivered entire electrical and automation package for the plant as turnkey solution. The plant has reduced the arsenic level into acceptable international standards. The water entering the plant is treated completely; the output of the plant is thickened sludge.
Following was under the scope of ABC ENSER,

–          Procurement and erection of 34.5kV Medium Voltage energy line and switchgear,

–          2.000kva transformer station, main distribution and power factor correction cabinets,

–          3 pieces of 700kVA each diesel generator sets and synchronization system,

–          Automation and motor control cabinets for the plant.

The automation system is linked via fiber optic Ethernet network, the operator is able to monitor and control the plant from the control room.  Web based SCADA software allows users to access plant data remotely.  The plant is automated using Hitachi PLC and SCADA software.

SCADA records and reports the energy and process data while keeping the system parameters under control.  The plant runs automatically requiring minimum manpower while supplying clean water.

The system is designed to allow manual intervention needed in case of automation system malfunctioning.
